Bassist

Rasselas, SF

I made this picture at Rasselas, an Etheopian restaurant/jazz club on Filmore street in San Francisco.  Filmore street was once a thriving center of the jazz community.  Now there are just a few jazz clubs remaining, but there is an annual jazz fair on the street every summer.

The combo playing this night was headed by Chris Clark on the trumpet who used to have a standing gig at a restaurant in San Carlos.  We used to go down and hear Dwayne and Chris quite often.

I photographed this gentleman (I have forgotten his name.  If you know his name please email it to me.) in the middle of his solo.  He was swaying forward and back and I caught him at his full forward position.  I was bouncing around in front of the audience with my camera shooting pictures until Val told me I was starting to become a nuisance.  Fortunately I had already captured this image.

I originally liked my image of Chris made the same night more than this one.  But most people have told me they prefer this one as it looks more relaxed and jazzy and seems to reveal the musician more.

This image was probably made with a Nikkor 28/2 lens on Kodak TMZ 3200 film.
